TeXTILE NEWS

3rd Small FORMAT Challenge

Organised by Gudrun Heinz

"Textile News" is the third small format challenge that is again characterised by an enormous variety of the entries. A wide range of textile techniques were applied to create all the works, many kinds of materials were used and even the chosen sizes differ - within a limited total format. A total of 127 works coming from 10 different European countries were entered.

All the participants accepted the challenge to solve the problem unusually: by experimenting, with new combinations of materials and techniques put in surprising contexts. Imagination was allowed to run riot. Innovative statements, new stories, personal impressions are the results - all of them amusing, unusual, creative, well done.

92 works were selected for the exhibition. Plus some pieces that are shown in Solothurn and Pforzheim only.

 A participant wrote to me:

„I think, especially exhibitions like yours have the character of a large quilt, in which a lot of people share with single patches. Only the selection and the assembly make a wonderful complete artwork!"

I hope, that I was able to find a total arrangement - and from this following some sub-arrangements - in order to fit in as well as to emphasise every single work and to obtain an attractive composition in the end. If possible, a quite appealing arrangement of the exhibition.

The exhibition will be on tour during the next two years and will be shown at various venues, will also be hosted by some museums and is finally expected to be shown in Capetown/Southafrica on the occasion of an event held by the local quilt guild.

I know from previous exhibitions that every single exhibition venue offers new possibilities and may open up new perspectives - let's wait and see!

By the way: One of the pieces will be an award-winning one in the end. Visitors will vote for the best of show.

As always there is a CD-ROM featuring all the art works on display available. On the CD-ROM you will find a photograph of each piece as well as some interesting comments stated by the artists (in German). The price of each CD-ROM is 10,- EUR plus shipping and handling: 2,50 EUR within Germany (not insured) or 4,50 EUR within Europe (not insured). If interested, send an e-mail, please.

This revealing brochure is about 10 participating artists coming from Germany, Austria and Switzerland who show more of their work on high quality photographs. A "textile questionnaire" had to be completed as well. So the 24 pages contain 10 portraits, each of them individual and informative (in German). The price of each brochure is 10,- EUR plus shipping and handling: 2,50 EUR within Germany (not insured) or 4,50 EUR within Europe (not insured). If interested, send an e-mail, please.

Viewer's Choice:

Be it in Russia or in Italy or in Luxembourg – everywhere visitors were asked for voting for their favourite piece of work.  The winner is:

„Spuren II“ by Martha Roggli (Switzerland) Congratulations!

Numerous other works gained also lots of votes, a widely spread result. This indicates the rich variety and good quality of the pieces of art. Many visitors remarked, it would be difficult, even impossible to have "only" one vote.

How Amazing!

 Textile Experiments

2nd Small Size Challenge

74 textile artists coming from ten different European countries created pieces of art and entered the challenge. They used at least one kind of textile and also one kind of non-textile materials - the choice of technique(s) was up to them - to create a piece of work based on their own original ideas and design. So there are now art works which make us say: Oh! How Amazing!

The exhibition was shown at various venues.

Some of the participating artists gave some workshops, demonstrations and classes.

There is a CD-ROM featuring all creations submitted available. On the CD-ROM you will find a photograph of each submission as well as some interesting comments stated by the artists (in German). The price of each CD-ROM is 12,- EUR plus shipping and handling: 2,50 EUR within Germany (not insured) or 4,50  EUR within Europe (not insured).

To order your CD-ROM or for further information send an e-mail, please.

Best of Show:

Visitors were kindly asked for voting for their favourite work on display. After having checked lots of ballots we have now a result:

"Gefährliches (Pf)Laster", made by Dörthe Lustnauer (D), was the most popular art work. Congratulations
