4th International Small Format Challenge

Organised by Gudrun Heinz

Textile News: Freiheit · Liberté · Freedom

is the theme of the 4th international challenge, organised by Gudrun Heinz. The subject “freedom” is an important one for humans living today as well as in the past around the globe. The incidents in the North African-Arabian area which flared up shortly after the deadline for this competition indicate the topicality of this matter.

Freedom in thinking, freedom in society and freedom to develop one’s own personality, tolerance towards others, liberation from all kind of restricting commitments and of course unrestricted artistic expression ... participants had to deal with the question what kind of textile news in relation to freedom could be of interest to others.

We welcomed small format works that explored the theme "Freiheit · Liberté · Freedom" in an imaginative, exceptional and surprising way. Criteria for selection were message, creativity and interpretation as well as excellent craftsmanship.

261 works, created by 177 participants coming from 15 different European countries were entered, much more than ever expected!

A jury of three met twice to make the selection. I have to thank Ulrike Klemm, quilter herself, and Ilona Roskowetz, a teacher for fine arts, who supported me in a very useful and valuable way. In view of the wide variety really not an easy decision!

One of my personal challenges was, based on this selection, to design an arrangement of the whole exhibition as well as to emphasise every single of the 170 works as well. It is just like designing a large quilt ...

The entries reflect a wide variety of interpretations, techniques as well as use of materials. The challenge allowed many chances and opportunities and these were used frequently in a surprising manner.

The exhibition is designed to be touring and will be shown at various venues both in Germany and abroad.

By the way: One of the pieces will be an award-winning one in the end. Visitors will vote for their favourite pieces.

As always there is a CD-ROM featuring all the art works on display available. On the CD-ROM you will find a photograph of each piece as well as some interesting comments stated by the artists (in English or in German). The price of each CD-ROM is 12,- EUR plus shipping and handling: 2,50 EUR within Germany (not insured) or 4,50 EUR within Europe (not insured). If interested, send an e-mail, please.

Some more impressions? A really hot tip are the videos by Bonnie McCaffery (USA).

Please take a look at plenty of various quilts on show.

She visited "Freedom" as well and you will find the mini interview and pics in part 1 within the last third. Have fun!

Lots of interested visitors attend the vernissage on Friday, 23 September 2011.

Journalists of press, TV and the city-representative for culture would like to have interviews.

But it is not only one exhibition to be opened.

The Scheherazade-Quilts by Pia Welsch, some work of the group Network Quilters

as well as my own personal show entitled "Gudrun Heinz - Perspectives" have also travelled to Moscow.

Gallery Belyaevo is presenting all of them excellently.

Guests of Russia and abroad (a participant arrived even from Switzerland!) are very fond of the show.

More interviews, shoots, lectures and guided tours completed my programme during the following week:

... until Pia und me had to say: "Do Swidania, Moscow" ...
